Grewe Food and Gastronomy Collection (University of Barcelona)


The Grewe digital collection is a selection of 50 books on food and cooking from the sixteenth century to 1820, donated in 1997 to the University of Barcelona by Rudolf Grewe, an expert in gastronomy and food studies and the author of the volume Llibre de Sent Soví for the series on Catalan classics “Els nostres classics”. Grewe’s donation included 129 antiquarian books (from the sixteenth century to 1820) and nearly 1000 modern books.


The subjects addressed in these volumes, which are of major historical interest, include: the restaurant industry; historical treatises; bibliography and food; general recipes and recipes by country; recipes by product type and method of preparation; condiments, garnishes, sauces (salt, oils, vinegars, spices, etc.); beverages; cooking procedures and kitchen equipment; food preservation (preserves, freezing, etc.); the art of serving at table, and dietetics.


The documents appear in alphabetical order by title. Each record contains a digital version of the complete text and the bibliographic entry for the book, along with a link to the relevant card in the UB catalogue.
